Wesleyan baseball downs Endicott College, 8-2

Rocky Mount, NC - The Battling Bishop baseball team returned to its winning ways on Monday afternoon, downing Endicott College by an 8-2 score at Bauer Field.  Junior Matt Smith (pictured) led the Wesleyan offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with a triple, RBI, and two runs scored, while sophomore hurler Jonathan Lucas improved to 4-0 on the mound.  With the win, the Bishops are now 16-10 on the season.

Wesleyan wasted no time asserting itself on offense by forging a 6-0 lead after four innings.  Justin Batts and Zollie Woodlief each delivered RBI-singles in the first.  Woodlief then collected his second RBI of the day with a double in the Bishops' three-run fourth.

The Bishops added insurance runs in the fifth and eighth frames on Smith's triple and an RBI-single by senior Nathan West.

Lucas went seven complete and allowed no runs on two hits.  He also struck out four and walked just one.  He was relieved in the eighth by Jonathan Shearon, who gave up two runs on three hits.

Newham took the loss for the Gulls, tossing five inning and giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits.  Scanlon collected two of Endicott's five hits.

In addition to Smith's solid performance, Woodlief, West, and Mark Wooten all finished with two hits.  The Bishops ripped 12 hits as a team.

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday when the Bishops host a doubleheader with Lawrence University beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
