downs Endicott College, 8-2

- The Battling Bishop baseball team returned to its
winning ways on Monday afternoon, downing Endicott
College by an 8-2 score at Bauer Field. Junior
Matt Smith (pictured) led the Wesleyan offensive attack
by going 4-for-5 with a triple, RBI, and two runs
scored, while sophomore hurler Jonathan Lucas improved
to 4-0 on the mound. With the win, the Bishops are
now 16-10 on the season.
Wesleyan wasted no time
asserting itself on offense by forging a 6-0 lead after
four innings. Justin Batts and Zollie Woodlief
each delivered RBI-singles in the first. Woodlief
then collected his second RBI of the day with a double
in the Bishops' three-run fourth.
The Bishops added
insurance runs in the fifth and eighth frames on Smith's
triple and an RBI-single by senior Nathan West.
Lucas went seven
complete and allowed no runs on two hits. He also
struck out four and walked just one. He was
relieved in the eighth by Jonathan Shearon, who gave up
two runs on three hits.
Newham took the loss
for the Gulls, tossing five inning and giving up seven
runs (five earned) on nine hits. Scanlon collected
two of Endicott's five hits.
In addition to Smith's
solid performance, Woodlief, West, and Mark Wooten all
finished with two hits. The Bishops ripped 12 hits
as a team.
Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday when the Bishops
host a doubleheader with Lawrence University beginning
at 2:00 p.m. Both games are scheduled for seven
innings.
