Wesleyan baseball sweeps Shenandoah on Parent’s Day
Rocky
Mount, NC - The
Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan celebrated 2008
Parent’s Day on Sunday by turning in a doubleheader sweep of
Shenandoah University in USA South baseball action at Bauer
Field. Wesleyan earned a 10-6 victory in game one and a 5-4
victory in game two. With the two wins, the Bishops improve
to 23-9-1 on the season and finish conference play at 9-3
thanks to three consecutive league sweeps. The Hornets now
stand at 17-14 overall, 5-5 in USA South action.
The
Bishops turned in a nine-run seventh inning in game one to
erase a 3-1 Hornet lead. Junior Luke Williford delivered a
two-run double and RBI-triple in the frame, while senior Ted
Williams blasted a three-run double with the bases loaded to
highlight the scoring.
Down
10-3, Shenandoah managed two runs in the eighth and one in
the ninth, but it would not be enough as the Bishops used
four pitchers to secure the 10-6 victory.
Justin
Batts paced Wesleyan offensively with a 3-for-5 showing at
the plate, driving in two and scoring two. Greg Van Sickler
went 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Hornets.
NCWC
starter Kyle Robertson received a no-decision after going
six complete and allowing just one unearned run on six hits.
Freshman Justin Diener earned the win in relief, despite
giving up four runs (three earned) in just over an inning of
work. SU starter Matt Davis took the loss, allowing seven
runs (six earned) on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Game
two saw junior hurler Ben Moore go the distance in moving to
7-1 on the season. Moore allowed four runs (one earned) on
eight hits while striking out five.
Tied
3-3 entering the eighth, the Bishops took the lead on a
two-run double by freshman Daniel Moore. Shenandoah
scratched one in the ninth for the 5-4 final.
With
two hits in each game, senior Matt Smith tied Wesleyan's
all-time career hits record with his 251st.
Wesleyan returns to action on Friday when the Bishops travel
to Lynchburg College for a non-conference doubleheader. Game
one is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
