Blue &
Gold football earns first Top-25 national ranking
Rocky Mount, NC
- After a stunning upset
of top-seeded Washington & Jefferson in overtime on Saturday
afternoon, the Blue & Gold football team of North Carolina
Wesleyan earned its first national ranking in its brief
four-year history. Wesleyan, 9-2 overall and winner of
nine straight games, came in at #25 in the National Football
Gazette Weekly Top-40. The Bishops also received 22
and 17 votes in the D3Football.com and AFCA final Top-25 polls,
respectively.
Wesleyan shocked the
Division III world on Saturday when they upset the
9th-ranked and undefeated Presidents by a 35-34 score in
overtime. W&J attempted a fake point-after in hopes of
securing a two-point conversion for the win, but NCWC senior
Jezreel Davis stopped the run, igniting the celebration.
The win marked the first time in NCAA Division III football history that a #8 seed
knocked off a #1 seed in a 32-team bracket.
The first national
ranking is just one of many accomplishments for the 2007
Bishops. Wesleyan
has already set program
records for total wins (9), conference wins (7), consecutive
wins (9), and conference finish (1st). The Blue & Gold
also became the first team in USA South history to go
undefeated in league play.

game at fourth-seeded Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. Game time is slated
for 12:00 CST.
