Battling Bishop football dominates Christopher Newport, 35-7

Virginia Beach, VA - Senior Orlando Webb (pictured) hauled in five catches for 119 yards and a touchdown on Saturday afternoon, leading his North Carolina Wesleyan football team to a dominating 35-7 victory on the road at Christopher Newport. The Battling Bishops amassed 470 yards of offense as a team, while NCWC's defense held the Captains to just 183 yards on the day. Wesleyan has now won three straight games to move to 4-2 on the season, which includes a perfect 3-0 mark in USA South action.

The Bishops scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters en route to a 21-0 lead heading
into the final 15 minutes of play.

Wesleyan had opened the scoring late in the first period on a 2-yard rush by Teron Bush. The 5-play, 65 yard drive was highlighted by the play of NCWC's seniors as Bryan Haywood turned in a 33-yard run, and Alonzo Washington later caught a 23-yard pass from quarterback Bo Jordan to set up Bush's score.

Wesleyan struck again early in the second quarter when Jordan hit Webb with a 22-yard TD reception. The catch was Webb's second of the drive that went for over 20 yards, giving the Bishops a 14-0 lead heading into the break.

In the third quarter, NCWC's DeAngelo Stewart intercepted a Captain pass on CNU's own 10-yardline, and two carries later, Bush earned his second rushing score of the contest for a 21-0 Bishop lead.

CNU got on the board early in the fourth when tailback Tunde Ogen reeled off a 48-yard TD run. The Bishops, however, closed out the game with 14 unanswered points for the 35-7 final. The first saw Jordan hit Haywood with a 19-yard scoring catch, while sophomore Eric Williams capped a tremendous performance by Wesleyan's defense with a 40-yard interception return that closed out the scoring. The turnover was one of seven that Wesleyan's defense forced on the day as the Captains fumbled three times and had four passes picked off.

Offensively, Jordan finished 23-of-37 for 323 yards and two touchdowns for the Bishops, while Haywood and Bush combined for 112 rushing yards. Haywood also recorded a team-high six catches.

Defensively, freshman James Wallace again led the team with 11 tackles. Other defensive highlights included two sacks apiece by LeeRon Boykin and Jaren Wilcox, as well as 1.5 sacks by Antonio Harris.  Williams recorded two interceptions on the day, while the other two picks went to Edward Harrington and Stewart.

Wesleyan returns to action next Saturday when the Battling Bishops host Maryville College on Homecoming weekend. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Northern Nash Football Complex.
