Bishop golfers impress with runner-up finish at Fall Challenge

Rocky Mount, NC - The Battling Bishop golf team of North Carolina Wesleyan hosted its Second Annual Ford's Colony Fall Challenge on Saturday and Sunday, kicking off the 2009-10 season for third-year head coach Mark Cole and his squad. Behind an impressive 285 on Sunday, Wesleyan pulled to within one stroke of the title to secure a runner-up finish with a team score of 588 (+12). The Bishops (all pictured) had one top-5, two top-10, and five top-20 finishes in the tourney.

The two-round event, which featured 63 golfers from ten institutions, was won for the second straight year by Cape Fear Community College with a total team score of 587 (+11).  Barton's Daniel Claytor took home medalist honors with a six-under 138 (69-69).

Several newcomers to the NCWC squad made their collegiate debuts. Wesleyan's "A" team was led by freshman Jack Gilbert, who carded rounds of 75 and 70 to tie for 3rd place.  Teammate Greg Hughes tied for ninth with scores of 77 and 70, while sophomore Adam Coelho recorded rounds of 78 and 72 to tie for 18th. Freshmen Stefan Emmoth and Kristoffer Idestal rounded out the "A" squad with two-day totals of 150 (73-77) and 154 (81-73), respectively.

The Battling Bishops also entered three individuals in the tourney, with Dane Anderson (78-79), Darren Lau (75-82), and Robby Cavaliere (87-86) playing their first collegiate event.

Also of note, Wesleyan's first female golfer -- Alexandra Lee -- competed as an individual.  Lee carded rounds of 101 and 93 to finish eight strokes behind the tourney's other female participant, Courtney Hawks of Surry Community College.
