Bishop hoopsters drop two at Flagler Holiday Classic

St. Augustine, FL - The men's basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan opened up the 2007 portion of its schedule this week, returning to action at the 18th annual Flagler College Holiday Classic in St. Augustine, FL.  The Bishops dropped contests to Warner Southern and host Flagler on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.  Wesleyan is now 4-7 on the season.

In Thursday's action, homestanding Flagler forged a nine-point advantage at the break at 39-30 after shooting over 42 percent from the floor to the Bishops' 29.

Flagler pushed its lead to 12 at the 16:44 mark in the second half, but a 13-1 Wesleyan run over the next three minutes knotted the game at 48-48 with 13:36 remaining.

Sam Jozenville promptly knocked down a jumper to put Flagler back on top.  Three Bishop turnovers and a missed three-pointer in Wesleyan's next four possessions allowed the Saints to again push ahead by seven.

Wesleyan, however, would not go down without a fight, pulling to within three on four occasions before tying the game once again at 63-63 with 6:36 left in regulation.  Daniel Marsh’s ensuing layup broke the tie and started an 8-0 run by Flagler that secured the 83-73 win.

The two teams combined for 35 turnovers (19 by Flagler and 16 by Wesleyan) and there were 41 fouls committed between both squads.

Jozenville scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Saints. Bryan Borstelmann added 19 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots, while Marsh tallied 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half.

Drake led the Battling Bishops with 17 points and seven assists while Lenny Hall added 15 points and four assists. Sharard Carmichael tacked on 13 points and eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Jarvis Cobb contributed 11 points off the bench.

On Wednesday, Warner Southern’s Preston Adams sank a three-pointer with 12:04 left in the first half to put the Royals ahead 15-12.  They would never trail again in an 82-45 win over the Bishops.

Adams’ three-pointer started a 13-2 run that saw Warner Southern vault ahead 25-14. NC Wesleyan could only draw as close as six at 30-24 after a Sharard Carmichael layup with 4:59 left in the half.

The Royals would put the game away with a 16-4 run to close out the half and went into the lockeroom with a 46-28 lead. Warner Southern came out of the half and went on a 14-0 run that covered the first 4:17 of the half to take a commanding 60-28 lead, breezing to the 82-45 victory.

Errol Porteous led Warner Southern with a game-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds. Brandon Hamilton added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists while Alex Castillo tacked on 12 points. Adams scored 11 points coming off the bench.

Warner Southern shot a blistering 63.3% (19-30) in the first half and 55.7% (34-61) for the game. The Royals dominated scoring in the paint 38-16 and converted 23 North Carolina Wesleyan turnovers into 36 points.

Drake was the lone Battling Bishop player to score in double figures with 11 points.

The Bishops will close out their three-game road trip on Monday afternoon at Florida Christian.  Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
