NCWC hoopsters drop final two regular season games

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan men's basketball team dropped its final two regular season games of 2006-07 on Friday and Saturday, falling to Ferrum College and Averett University by 86-73 and 70-53 scores, respectively, in Everett Gymnasium.  Saturday saw the Bishops recognize the two senior members of their squad, Emanuel Alston and Stephen Mobley, prior to the game. Wesleyan completes its regular season slate with a 10-14 overall record and 5-7 conference mark.

On Saturday against AU (18-6, 9-3), both squads shot poorly in the first half with the Cougars taking a slim 30-28 lead into the break.

Averett, however, came out on fire in the second half, while the Bishops continued to struggle from the floor.  The Cougars put together a 28-5 run over the first 10 minutes of the period to go up 58-33, and Wesleyan would not recover.  AU shot nearly 63 percent in the period.

Trey Drake and Adam Coleman each chipped in 12 points for the Bishops.  Coleman also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

For Averett, Cory McDaniel and Shaun Hagwood led a balanced attack with 10 points apiece.

On Friday against Ferrum (11-14, 5-7), the Panthers took an early 5-4 lead on a jumper by Cedric Jones with 16:56 remaining in the first half.  They went on to forge a 42-28 lead at intermission and did not trail again in the contest.

The Panthers led by as many as 25 in the second half, but Wesleyan battled back to cut the lead to single digits, 72-63, at the 3:06 mark behind the play of Drake.  Ferrum, however, responded with a 13-5 run to go back up 17 and end any thoughts of a Bishop comeback.

Drake finished with 26 points, while Coleman pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for the Bishops, who shot just 35.7 percent on the night.

The Panthers were led by Jon Godsey's 26 points and 12 rebounds.  Jones added 20 points and Keith Harris 11.  Ferrum shot a solid 56.6 percent from the floor in the game.

In USA South Tournament first round play, the Bishops will travel to Christopher Newport on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. match-up with the Captains.   Wesleyan enters the tournament as the #6 seed, while the Captains are the #3 seed.  The Bishops swept CNU during the regular season.
