Newport News, VA - In USA South Tournament first round action, sophomore Adam Coleman's put-back at the buzzer gave the men's basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan a thrilling come-from-behind win over homestanding Christopher Newport on Tuesday night in Newport News. Coleman (pictured) scored 17 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, but none were more important than the final two.
The Bishops, who led 34-30 at the half, saw Christopher Newport build an 11-point advantage, 57-46, with 8:44 remaining in the final period.
A 10-2 Bishop run over the next two and a half minutes cut the Captain led to just three at the 6:07 mark, but CNU again pushed ahead by eight thanks to a Theo Baker three-pointer and Edward Riley lay-up.
Down 64-56 with 4:18 left in regulation, Coleman and senior Stephen Mobley combined for the next eight Bishop points, and Wesleyan found itself down just 69-66 with 41 ticks left on the clock.
Two consecutive Captain turnovers gave the Bishops a chance to tie with 16 seconds left. Junior Lenny Hall's three-point attempt was rebounded by Mobley and kicked out to freshman Trey Drake, who calmly sank the equalizing basket with eight seconds left.
Another crucial CNU turnover gave Wesleyan back the ball with six seconds on the clock, setting the stage for Coleman's rebound and put-back of Hall's jumper at the buzzer for thee 71-69 win.
Coleman pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with his 19 points. Hall and Drake each finished with 13.
For CNU, Riley netted a game-high 20 points, while Donta Selden added 16. Mark Blasingame turned in the game's lone double double with 12 points and 14 boards.
The difference in the game came with turnovers. The Bishops committed just 11 on the night compared to the Captains' 26.
Wesleyan is now 11-14 overall, while 3rd-seeded CNU ends its season with a 15-11 mark. Tuesday's win over the Captains was the third for the Bishops in 2006-07.
