Late run lifts
Hampden-Sydney to
81-69 win over
Bishops

- The Tigers of
Hampden-Sydney
College used a 16-3
run late in the
second half to pull
away from North
Carolina Wesleyan
for an 81-69 win in
Tuesday night’s
basketball action at
Everett Gymnasium.
The game, which
featured ten lead
changes and nine
ties, had been a
battle up to that
point. The Tigers
move to 5-3 win the
win, while the
Bishops drop to 4-5
overall.
The Bishops and
Tigers fought to a
33-33 tie at the
break. Wesleyan
shot an impressive
59 percent from the
floor in the period
but committed 16
turnovers and could
not build an
advantage.
Hampden-Sydney was
plagued by turnovers
as well with 15.
HSC’s Matt Green led
all scorers in the
period with nine
points, while Trey
Drake led the
Bishops with six.
Both players’ points
came from behind the
arc with Green
knocking down three
treys and Drake two.
The first ten
minutes of the
second half saw the
two squads combine
for seven lead
changes and five
ties. Wesleyan held
a slim 55-54 with
10:49 remaining in
regulation, but the
Tigers responded
with the 16-3 run
over next five
minutes to go up
12. The Bishops
would get no closer
than eight the rest
of the way.
HSC’s Matt Green
turned in a
game-high 20 points
on 6-of-8 shooting
behind the arc.
Troy Kaase recorded
the game’s lone
double-double with
19 points and 12
rebounds. Mike
Edwards and Turner
King rounded out the
Tigers’
double-figure
scorers with 17 and
10 points,
respectively.
Lenny Hall paced
Wesleyan with 17
points, while Trey
Drake added 13
points and dished
out five assists.
Jarvis Cobb chipped
in 10 points off the
bench.
On the night,
Hampden-Sydney shot
55 percent from the
floor, including 68
percent from
downtown in the
second half. The
Bishops shot nearly
53 percent on the
night.
HSC won the battle
of the boards 39-20.
Wesleyan will now
break for the
holidays before
returning to action
on January 3rd and
4th at the Flagler
College Holiday
Classic. The
Bishops will take on
Warner Southern
College in the
tournament’s first
game.
