Battling Bishops drop 84-59 road decision to Virginia Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, VA - North Carolina Wesleyan dropped its second straight men's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon, dropping an 84-59 decision to the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan on the road.  The loss wraps up the 2008 portion of the Battling Bishops' schedule and sends NCWC into the holiday break with an 8-2 overall record.

VWC's defensive play helped the Marlins set the tone early as the Bishops struggled to find an offensive rhythm.  Marlin junior Stephen Fields scored off a steal to give VWC the first basket of the game, and the Marlins would never trail.  NCWC's Adam Coleman nailed a jumper to tie the game early, but the Marlins created some distance behind the strong inside play of Quniton McDuffie.

Coleman kept NCWC close, scoring again to cut the Marlins' lead to 16-13 with 11:02 remaining in the half. VWC, however, put together an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 27-16 advantage.

A three-pointer by the Bishops' Jarmel Arrington pulled the Bishops back into a single-digit deficit at 29-21, but VWC answered with a 14-4 surge that opened up a 43-25 lead. Virginia Wesleyan led 43-28 at the half and never let North Carolina Wesleyan closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

McDuffie led a balanced VWC scoring attack with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds.  Paul Meredith also turned in a solid performance with a game-high seven assists and four steals.

Arrington led North Carolina Wesleyan with 19 points and was the only Bishop to reach double figures. Coleman collected in a team-high five rebounds and three steals.

VWC (4-5) turned in a 58.2 shooting percentage for the game, highlighted by a 60 percent effort in the second half.  NCWC struggled at just 33 percent on the day.

After breaking for the holidays, the Bishops return to action on January 5th at Penn State-Brandywine. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Media, PA.
