David Doino enters his first season with the North Carolina Wesleyan men’s basketball program. A 2005 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College with a degree in communications, Doino joined the Bishops in the summer of 2007 after serving three years as assistant coach at his alma mater. As an assistant coach, he helped lead the Marlins to the 2006 NCAA Division III National Championship.

Prior to his coaching stint at VWC, Doino was a standout basketball player for the Marlins. He enjoyed a stellar collegiate career that saw him become a three-time All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honoree. As a four-year starter, Doino led Virginia Wesleyan to a 70-36 record, including the second best record in program history at 20-8 in 2003-04. That same season saw the Marlins make an appearance in the ODAC Tournament Championship game.

At the completion of his career, Doino ranked tenth among VWC’s all-time leading scorers with 1,220 career points. Additionally, he ranked third in free throws made (332), fourth in rebounds (731), sixth in assists, and ninth in three-pointers made (104). Doino feels that his collegiate career has given him an additional edge with the players that he coaches.

“My playing experience has helped me tremendously,” he says. “Many players want to learn from coaches that have had success as a player, and I feel that I have the tools to relate to our student-athletes.”

Doino is a native of the Bronx, NY and lived there until his freshman year of high school. He then took his basketball talents to Scranton, PA where he attended Abington Heights High School. Doino left Abington as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,843 points.

Doino’s primary duties include recruiting and developing post players. He will also coordinate the athletic department’s community service efforts and head up Wesleyan’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Name:  Josh Turnpaugh

Josh Turnpaugh, who played at Goshen College from 2000-2004, enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Battling Bishop men’s basketball program. Prior to joining NC Wesleyan, he served three seasons as an assistant with his alma mater.

A talented shooter, Turnpaugh started in 105 of 123 total games played at Goshen, ending his career as one of the program’s top three-point threats. He knocked down 231 career treys (fourth in program history) and shot 39 percent from behind the arc (seventh best all-time). Turnpaugh remains GC’s fifth-best career free throw shooter, making 82 percent of his attempts.

Perhaps most notable, however, is Turnpaugh’s penchant for team success as he helped Goshen to a 21-12 record as a senior (2003-2004) and a 21-11 record in his first season on the bench (2004-2005). Those seasons remain Goshen’s only 20-win seasons to date.

Name:  Courtney Alston
Office Phone:

Courtney Alston joins the North Carolina Wesleyan men’s basketball coaching staff after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Louisburg College. While at Louisburg, Alston worked with legendary coach Enid Drake, as well as new Hurricane coach Aaron Denton last season. He will assist with the Battling Bishops’ recruiting efforts and scouting, along with other organizational duties as assigned.

During his time at Louisburg, the Hurricanes were ranked as high as #11 in the country among junior colleges. During the 2006-2007 season, he helped coach Louisburg transfer Buddy Williams, who is now a junior at Wesleyan.

“Wesleyan basketball has such a tradition of family, of teaching, and of playing the game the right way. This is a great opportunity for me to grow as a coach and as a person,” commented Alston.
