Persson and Gudnason
lift Bishops to 4-0 win at Methodist
Fayetteville,
NC
- Junior Danny Persson (pictured) scored a pair of goals and freshman
Porir Gudnason recorded his third shutout of the season to
lift their North Carolina Wesleyan men's soccer team to a
4-0 shutout of Methodist University on Saturday in
Fayetteville. The Battling Bishops improve to 8-2
overall and remain undefeated in USA South play at 3-0. Also
with the win, Wesleyan extends its league unbeaten streak to
27 games dating back to the 2004 season.
Persson scored what would
prove to be the eventual gamewinner at the 39:15 mark of the
first half. It was all the offense the Monarchs
allowed in the period as MU goalie Kyle Beach made five
saves.
The second half saw the
Bishops score less than two minutes in when Christopher
Helms found Owen White on a corner kick. White headed
the ball home for a 2-0 Wesleyan advantage. Persson then
tacked on his second score of the contest and team-leading
11th goal of the season when he booted home an Ousman Sarr
pass in the 79th minute.
The Bishops completed the
game's scoring less than a minute later on a successful
penalty kick by Benjamin Schmedes.
Wesleyan out-shot Methodist
24-8 in the match. Beach finished with eight saves, while
Gudnason recorded two stops of his own. NCWC also held a 9-3
advantage in corner kicks.
The Battling Bishops travel
to Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday for a
non-conference match-up with the Marlins. Game time is
slated for 7:00 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
