Bishops cruise past
Quakers in men's soccer action, 8-2
Rocky
Mount, NC - Freshman midfielder Christopher Helms netted
his first goal of the season on Tuesday afternoon, and it
proved to be the eventual gamewinner as the Bishop men's soccer team
cruised to a dominating 8-2 win over
Guilford College at Scalf Field. Helms (pictured) also
notched his team-leading 10th, 11th, and 12th assists of the
season in the match. Wesleyan, currently ranked 19th in the
latest NSCAA national poll, improves to 11-2 on the season
with the win, while the Quakers drop to 3-9-1 with the loss.
Junior Robert Ivanovich
scored the game's initial goal when he blasted home a deep
ball from Suilabayu Fon in the 14th minute. The
Quakers' Jordan Alexander countered with an unassisted goal
less than five minutes later to knot the score at 1-1.
The Bishops proceeded to
net five unanswered goals over the final 27 minutes of the
period. Danny Persson gave NCWC the lead at 2-1 with a score
from Helms at the 19:02 mark, while Helms' goal came in the
29th minute off an Arkadiusz Trochowski free kick. Another
Persson goal and a score by Owen White sandwiched an own
goal for a 6-1 Wesleyan lead at intermission.
In the second half, Persson
scored his third and fourth goals of the game in the 55th
and 69th minutes to up the Bishops' lead to 8-1. The junior
forward currently has 18 goals on the season and is just
three shy of the program's season record.
Guilford completed the
game's scoring when Kereith Pinnock booted home a Hugh
Griffis corner kick with less that four minutes remaining
for the 8-2 final.
Wesleyan out-shot Guilford
38-6 in the match. The Quaker goalie trio of Peter Truitt,
Patrick Childs, and Jonathan Shine combined to make 11
saves. Bishop keepers Porir Gudnason and Benjamin Kruk
split time in goal and each allowed one score.
The Battling Bishops next
host non-conference foe Chowan University on Saturday. Game time is slated for
1:00 p.m. at Scalf
Field.
