Persson breaks two
records in Bishops' 9-0 win over Chowan
Rocky
Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan men's soccer
team improved to 12-2 overall on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0
shutout of Chowan University at Scalf Field. With four goals
in the contest, junior forward Danny Persson (pictured)
broke two NCWC records with his 22nd goal and 50th point of
the season. The previous season record for goals had been 21
by Scott Kennell in 1997, while the previous season record
for points had been 47 (accomplished by three different
players).
Persson scored the eventual
gamewinner in the 18th minute off a cross by Robert
Ivanovich. He proceeded to complete a first half hat
trick with scores in the 21st and 23rd minutes. Both goals
were assisted by Arkadiusz Trochowski, who scored the
Bishops' fourth goal from Persson at the 34:04 mark.
NCWC took its 4-0 lead into intermission.
In the second half, Persson
broke both records less than four minutes in when he took a
pass from Christopher Helms and deposited it in the back of
the net. Helms went on to score Wesleyan's next two
goals, while Nicolai Laudrup and Suilabayu Fon recorded the
contest's last two scores for the 9-0 final.
NCWC out-shot Chowan 47-1
on the day. CU keeper Ronnie Thompson made six saves in the
losing effort, while Benjamin Kruk earned the shutout for
the Bishops.
Wesleyan returns to USA
South action next Saturday when they travel to Greensboro
College for a 2:00 p.m. match-up with the Pride.
