Rocky
Mount, NC -
The North Carolina Wesleyan men's soccer team cruised to a
7-0 win over Methodist University in Friday's semifinal
action of the 2008 USA South Conference Tournament in Rocky
Mount. The 2nd-seeded Bishops took a 2-0 lead into the
break and went on to score five unanswered goals in the
second half. Wesleyan improves to 14-3-1 with the
victory and will face top-seeded Christopher Newport in
Saturday's championship. The Captains (14-3-3) downed
Shenandoah by a 6-0 score in the day's final match.
NCWC freshman Owen White
scored the eventual gamewinner in the 18th minute off an
assist by Christopher Helms. The Bishops added to their lead
with a goal by USAC Player of the Year Danny Persson just
eight minutes later. White and Helms were each credited with
an assist on the play.
In the second half, five
different players tallied scores. Arkadiausz Trochowski
(48:57), Ousman Sarr (52:12 from Laudrup), Helms (59:37 from
White), Persson (62:59 from Sharp), and Stefan Hauksson
(75:54) secured the 7-0 final for the Bishops.

combined to make 10 saves, while Bishop keeper Alberto
Faisca earned his first shutout of the season.
CNU downed Shenandoah in a
near identical contest in the day's second semifinal.
Tyler Clare gave the Captains all the offense they would
need with a goal at the 16:06 mark from Jimmy Hash. Scores
by Kyle Allan (39:00) and Kenny Huttman (41:43 from Carver)
gave CNU a 3-0 lead at the break.
The second half saw the
Captains tally three more goals, beginning with Brian
Tweed's in the 48th minute from Brian Lybert. Lybert later
sandwiched another Allan goal for the 6-0 final.
CNU out-shot the Hornets
25-7. SU keepers Brian Garretson and Arman
Bozorgmanesh combined for 10 saves, while Captain goalie
Matt Tengs earned the shutout.
The Bishops and Captains
will now face off in Saturday's championship game slated for
2:00 p.m. at Scalf Field. Just last Saturday, the two squads
fought to a 3-3 double overtime tie. This time, an automatic
bid to the NCAA Tournament is on the line.
