NCWC wins Doug Hamilton Tourney; Schmedes named MVP

Greensboro, NC - The Battling Bishop men's soccer team won its third straight match on Sunday, downing Heidelberg College by a 5-0 score in the Second Annual Doug Hamilton Memorial Tournament hosted by Greensboro College. Having previously defeated Marymount University on Saturday in a 2-0 shutout, Wesleyan rebounded from last week's runner-up finish at its own Fall Classic by taking championship honors in its second tourney of the season.

Junior defender Benjamin Schmedes was named Most Valuable Player, while Ousmann Sarr, Edgar Zaldivar, Robert Ivanovich, and Oliver Madejski were also tabbed All-Tournament.  The Bishops are now 3-1 to start the season.

Against Marymount on Saturday, Zaldivar scored in the first half and Justin Wolf in the 83rd minute for the Bishops. Stephen Mapp and William Brahmstedt each had 2 saves for the Saints, who fell to 1-2-1 with the loss. NCWC out-shot Marymount 18-9 in the match with freshman keeper Benjamin Kruk making three saves and earning his first career shutout in goal.

On Sunday, Wesleyan defeated Heidelberg, 5-0. Ousmann Sarr scored early for the Bishops, and they led 1-0 at the break. Hlynur Hauksson, Robert Ivanovich, and Danny Persson finished out the scoring for the Bishops in the second half.  Persson tallied two goals on the day, while keeper Porir Gudnason earned Wesleyan's second straight shutout in his first start.

The Bishops and Pride both went 2-0 in the tournament. NCWC, however, had a +7 goal differential (two more than GC) and won the tourney trophy.

The Bishops return home on Wednesday when they host Division II rival Barton College at Scalf Field. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
