Bishops enjoy offensive explosion in 13-0 shutout of Ferrum

- In Saturday's USA South soccer opener, the Battling Bishop
men of North Carolina Wesleyan had nine different players
score goals as NCWC cruised to a 13-0 shutout of Ferrum
College at Scalf Field. Up 2-0 at the half, Wesleyan
netted four goals in a three-minute span near the start of
the final period to put the game away and ignite an
offensive explosion. Wesleyan has now won six straight to
move to 6-1 on the season, 1-0 in league play. Ferrum is now
2-5 overall, 0-1 in the USAC.
Junior Edgar Zalivar
(pictured) scored the eventual gamewinner in the 11th minute
on an Owen White assist. Ousman Sarr netted an
unassisted goal in the 23rd minute to complete the first
half scoring.
Danny Persson got the
Bishops' offense going just 2:19 into the final period when
he booted home the game's third goal on a Robert Ivanovich
assist. Wesleyan then proceeded to tally four goals in
a three-minute span, beginning with a Jimmy Pierce goal at
the 51:28 mark. Sarr, Luke Oakley, and Ivanovich all
followed suit with scores, the final coming at the 54:11
mark.
Up 7-0, the Bishops
continued their on-slaught when Sarr completed his first
collegiate hat trick in the 59th minute on Christopher
Helms' second assist of the contest. Goals by Persson and
Tom Sharp were followed by a pair of goals by Fred
Acheampong, and Dennis Tasche completed the scoring with his
first goal of the season with 21 seconds remaining.
Tasche finished with three assists, while Benjamin Schmedes,
Nicolai Laudrup, Stefan Hauksson, Persson, and Sharp also
recorded helpers.
Wesleyan out-shot Ferrum
32-4 in the contest. NCWC keeper Benjamin Kruk earned
the shutout by making three saves. Chris Taylor took
the loss for the Panthers after facing 21 shots in 53
minutes and making five saves.
The Bishops will continue USA South play
on Wednesday when they travel to Averett University. Game
time is slated for 4:00 p.m. in Danville, VA.
