Bishop soccer falls to
Emory in season-ending shootout, 3-2
Atlanta,
GA -
In a thrilling NCAA Tournament Second Round match, the 4th-ranked
Eagles of Emory University advanced to the round of 16
after downing North Carolina Wesleyan in a shootout, 3-2. The two teams fought
to a 1-1 double-overtime tie before the Eagles' Jordan Edelman
gave Emory the right to move on in the tournament with a
successful penalty kick past the out-stretched hands of
NCWC's Alberto Faisca. The Bishops end their season with a
16-3-2 overall record.
The Eagles struck
first in the match, as Joey Howie notched his fourth goal of
the season in the 11th minute. Emory would carry the 1-0
advantage into halftime, in addition to a 6-3 advantage in
shots.
In the second
period, Wesleyan did not take to long to even the score. At
the 49:17 mark, freshman Owen White collected a deflected
shot in the box and was able to convert his 12th goal of the
season. The initial shot was taken by Danny Persson and
resulted in a team save for the Eagles.
The game would
remain tied at 1-1 throughout the rest of regulation and two
overtime periods. Emory managed the only two shots in the
overtime frames, one in each period. The Eagles finished the
match with a 15-9 advantage in shots, despite both teams
ending with five shots on goal.
In the shootout,
Emory goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock got the Eagles off to a
strong start, diving to his left to make saves on the
Bishops’ first two shots, taken by Benjamin Schmedes and
Arkadiusz Trochowski. After Emory senior Marc Del Marmol
missed his first shot wide left, the Eagles’ Patrick Carver
gave Emory an advantage, converting on a shot to the left of
Faisca.
Wesleyan’s Oliver
Madejski would even the count with a shot to the high left
that sent Laycock to the right on the Bishops’ third
kick. The shootout would remain tied at 1-1 after Andre
Jakubowski’s kick up the middle was fielded cleanly by
Faisca.
Both teams would
convert on their fourth kicks, as the Bishops’ Nicolai
Laudrup scored on a shot to the right, while the Eagles’
Joey Howie evened the score with a shot to the left.
Ousman Sarr took the
final kick for the Bishops, hitting the crossbar with his
shot. With the game at his feet, Edelman took a perfect shot
to the upper left corner of the goal just past the
outstretched hands of Faisca to write Emory’s ticket to the
next round.
With the tie,
Emory’s record moved to 16-1-1 on the season. The Eagles
will face Christopher Newport in the round of 16.
