Bishop men suffer tough
2-1 loss at Christopher Newport
Newport News,
VA
- Christopher Newport's Brian Lybert netted a goal with 7:13
remaining in regulation to lift his Captains to a 2-1
victory over visiting North Carolina Wesleyan in Wednesday
night's USA South Conference opener. With the victory,
2nd-ranked CNU (10-1) avenges a 2-1 loss to the Battling
Bishops in last season's USAC Tournament Championship.
Wesleyan is now 4-6 overall.
The two teams fought to a 1-1 tie at intermission after
NCWC's Javier Castrillo tallied a score on an assist from
Staffan Alm with ten seconds remaining in the opening
period. The Captains had held a 1-0 lead for majority of the
half on a Winston Matthieson goal just 1:26 into the
contest.
With neither team able to net the
go-ahead score over the first 37 minutes of the second half,
the stage was set for Lybert's heroics. CNU held a 17-6
advantage in shots on the night, recording nine
shots-on-goal to the the Battling Bishops' two. NCWC
sophomore keeper Benjamin Kruk turned in a solid performance
with seven saves.
The Bishops return to action on Saturday
evening when they travel to Ferrum College for a 6:00 p.m.
match-up with the Panthers.
