Muhseler's hat trick
lifts Wesleyan to 7-3 win at Ferrum
Ferrum,
VA
- Freshman Michael Muhseler recorded his first collegiate
hat trick on Saturday evening, helping his Battling Bishop
men's soccer team to a 7-3 USA South victory on the road at
Ferrum College. Muhseler (pictured) also notched assists on
Wesleyan's first two scores, while his first goal proved to
be the eventual gamewinner. The Bishops are now 5-6 on the
season and even their league record at 1-1. Ferrum drops to
2-7 overall, 0-1 in conference action.
Wesleyan raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead
thanks to a goal by Javier Castrillo at the 8:06 mark,
followed by a pair of scores by Irvin Herrera in the 14th
and 44th minutes.
The Bishops added to their lead with
Muhseler's first score just 3:51 into the final period on an
assist from Otis Maddison. Ferrum, however, cut the lead in
half when Thomas Robinson and Matt Poole netted two quick
goals in the 59th and 62nd minutes. Matt Ballinger assisted
on both.
Wesleyan countered with two penalty kick
scores by Muhseler to effectively put the game out of reach
at 6-3. Robinson managed another goal for the Panthers at
the 79:28 mark, while NCWC's Jorge Ventura tallied the
game's final score in the 88th minute for the 7-3 final.
NCWC out-shot the Panthers 33-7 on the
day. FC keeper Ben Pittsley made 10 saves in the contest,
while Bishop goalie Benjamin Kruk notched two saves to earn
the win. Wesleyan also held a 13-2 advantage in corner
kicks.
The Bishops continue USA South play on
Wednesday when they host Methodist University. Game time is
slated for 4:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
