Bishop men down
Shenandoah 4-1, fall to #13 Rochester 3-2
Lancaster,
PA
- The men's soccer team of North Carolina Wesleyan split a
pair of matches over the weekend, downing Shenandoah by a
4-1 score in Friday's USA South action before falling to
13th-ranked Rochester by a 3-2 score on Sunday. Senior Edgar
Zaldivar again paced the Bishop offense by tallying two
goals against the Hornets, including the gamewinner, and
then adding Wesleyan's second score versus Rochester.
On Friday night at Shenandoah (3-9-2, 1-4
USAC), the Hornets took a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute
on a score by L.A. St. Hill from Kyle Farrell. The
Bishops, however, managed four unanswered goals over the
final 70 minutes of play to secure the 4-1 victory.
Freshman Irvin Herrera's unassisted goal at the 42:08 mark
knotted the score at 1-1 heading into halftime, while
Zaldivar's two goals sandwiched a goal by Arkadiusz
Trochowski in the second half.
The Bishops out-shot SU 14-7 on the night
and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Philipp Uttikal
earned his fourth win in goal, making three saves in the
match. Hornet keeper Asman Bozorgmanesh notched eight saves
in the losing effort.
Sunday's game versus Rochester (10-1-2)
saw the match go scoreless for more than an hour before
Rochester broke through the Bishops' defense. Jimmy
Parrinello opened the scoring at 63:20, knocking home a
pass from J.J. Dennstedt. Timmer McCarthy doubled the
lead at 66:48 when he bent a corner kick directly into
the net, and the lead grew to 3-0 at 69:20 when
McCarthy's chip into the box was headed home by Chris
Blivin.
Wesleyan, however, fought back with a
pair of late scores. The Bishops netted their first goal
at the 80:30 mark when Javier Castrillo fed Ousmann Sarr
for a header. Wesleyan's second goal came with 53
seconds to play, scored by Zaldivar and assisted by
Jimmy Pierce. It was too little too late, however, as
the Bishops fell 3-2.
Michael Peacock played the first
80:30 in the Rochester goal. He made three saves and
allowed one goal, while Brandon Campbell played the
final 9:30 and gave up NCWC's final score. Uttikal
went the distance for Wesleyan, saving four
Rochester shots. Each team managed 10 shots in the
match.
The Battling Bishops return to USA South
action on Wednesday when they host Methodist University.
Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
