White's pair of goals lifts Bishops to 6-1 season-opening victory

Greensboro, NC - Sophomore Owen White netted two goals, including the eventual gamewinner, to lead his 24th-ranked Battling Bishop men's soccer squad to a 6-1 victory over Guilford College in Tuesday night's 2009 season opener.  White tallied the first two scores of the contest in the 11th and 21st minutes and helped the Bishops forge a 4-0 halftime lead that they would not relinquish.

White's first goal came on a blast from 13 yards out at the 10:11 mark. His second saw the talented forward beat his defender for a 6-yard shot.

Freshman Irvin Herrera got in on the action in the 40th minute when he notched his first collegiate goal on a diving header from 10 yards out. Senior Edgar Zaldivar proceeded to round out the first half scoring with an unassisted goal just 1:26 later off a free kick.

In the second half, freshman Michael Muhseler and junior Dennis Tasche sandwiched the Quakers' lone score in the 56th and 89th minutes, respectively. Muhseler's score came off a Robert Ivanovich corner kick, while Tasche was assisted by Jorge Ventura.

The Bishops out-shot Guilford (0-1) 25-7 in the match as GC goalie Peter Truitt made seven saves. NCWC keeper Dennis Kommal earned his first win, making two saves over 90 minutes of play.

Wesleyan (1-0) returns to action this weekend when the Bishops host their 2009 Roger Taylor Fall Classic. Participating teams include Greensboro College, New Jersey City College, and The College of New Jersey.  NCWC will face TCNJ on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
