Trio of second half
goals sends Roanoke to 3-1 win over NCWC
Roanoke,
VA
- After fighting to a scoreless tie at the break, Roanoke
College managed three second half goals to take down
visiting North Carolina Wesleyan by a 3-1 score in Tuesday's
non-conference men's soccer action. The loss is the third
straight for the Battling Bishops, who drop to 3-5-0 on the
season. With the victory, Roanoke moves to 7-3-2 overall.
Each team managed four shots in the
opening period, none of which were on-goal. The second
half, however, was a different story as both offenses
generated multiple scoring opportunities. Roanoke held a
13-10 advantage in shots in the period, while the Bishops
took a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Roanoke got on the board first in the
49th minute on an unassisted score by Zaan Janse. RC
increased its lead to 2-0 at the 63:19 mark on a goal by
Kayvon Sarmadi.
The Bishops looked to make a comeback
when Ousman Saar booted home an Edgar Zaldivar assist in the
80th minute to make the score 2-1, but Roanoke countered
with a Michael Stark score at the 84:26 mark to put the game
out of reach.
NCWC keeper Philipp Uttikal suffered the
loss in goal, while RC's Tyler Rinko made three saves en
route to the victory.
Next up for the Bishops is an away
match-up with Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon.
