NCWC men's tennis falls in semifinal tourney action

Burlington, NC - The Bishop men's tennis squad saw its 2007 season come to an end on Saturday as Wesleyan fell to top-seeded Averett University by a 6-3 score in the USA South Tournament's semifinals.  NCWC had previously downed Greensboro 7-2 on Friday to advance. Junior Drew McLachlan paced the Bishops as the only Wesleyan player to go undefeated in both singles and doubles play, while seniors Zach Marks and Daniel Pace played the final matches of their careers.  Pace (pictured) teamed with McLachlan to go 2-0 at #3 doubles.

On Friday, the 4th-seeded Bishops turned in an impressive 7-2 win over the 5th-seeded Pride.  Pace was a straight-set winner at #2 singles, while teammates Matt Smith, Mike Harrison, Kyle McCandless, and McLachlan were also singles winners.

Wesleyan had taken a 2-1 lead in doubles actions thanks to the 2nd-seeded tandem of McCandless and Smith, who were 9-8 (7-4) winners.  Pace and McLachlan breezed to an 8-1 win at the third slot.

On Saturday, top-seeded Averett took a 2-1 lead in doubles action and managed 4-of-6 wins in singles play.  Pace and McLachlan scored the Bishops' lone doubles point, while McLachlan and McCandless earned straight-set wins at #5 and #6 doubles, respectively.  Like McLachlan, McCandless was also 2-0 in tournament singles.

For his efforts, McLachlan was named to the USA South All-Tournament team.

The Bishops end the season with a 6-9 overall record and 4th-place finish in the USA South with a 3-3 league mark.
