Bishop men's tennis tabbed 16th in
final ITA national rankings
Rocky
Mount, NC
- The Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) has released its final national
rankings for the 2009 season with the Battling Bishops of
North Carolina Wesleyan coming in at #16. The ranking is the
highest in the history of the men's tennis program and caps
a record-breaking season that saw Wesleyan capture the USA
South Regular Season and Tournament Championships, as well
as an NCAA Tournament berth.
In addition to NCWC's national
recognition, the Bishops also made waves regionally. After
turning in a 15-1 overall record this spring, including an
upset of Mary Washington in the first round of the NCAAs,
Wesleyan finished as the 4th-ranked team in the Atlantic
South.
Other regional accolades included Antti
Saari's #9 individual ranking in singles play, and #5
ranking in doubles play alongside teammate Alexey Rumyantsev.
Saari, a sophomore from Lahti, Finland, was also voted the
2009 Atlantic South Player to Watch next season after
anchoring both #1 singles and doubles for head coach Dominic
Modise.
