Peace softball earns doubleheader sweep of NC Wesleyan

Raleigh, NC - Peace College earned a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan in Wednesday afternoon's USA South softball action. The Pacers used a three-run fifth inning in game one to pull away for a 6-2 win, while Ashley Stansbury threw a four-hit shutout in game two en route to a 7-0 victory. PC improves to 12-10 on the season, 5-1 in league play, while the Battling Bishops drop to 6-10 overall, 1-5 in conference action.

In the opener, the Pacers plated a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bishops answered with a pair of scores in the fourth to go up 2-1 thanks to two hits and two Peace fielding errors. Whitney Moshier and Jessica Poindexter each tallied singles in the inning, while Payton Gordon recorded Wesleyan's lone RBI.

Unfortunately, the lead was shortlived as the Pacers scored two in their half of the inning to retake the lead, 3-2. PC proceeded to plate three insurance runs in the fifth to pull away for the victory.

Dani Abbey and Kate Braun each recorded two hits in the game for the Bishops, who turned in seven hits as a team. Freshman Ashley Driver (3-5) took the loss in the circle, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits in five complete. Sophomore Kacie Brandes tossed a scoreless sixth in relief.

Melissa Williams paced the Peace offense with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate, including one run scored and one RBI. Stephanie Simmons (3-5) picked up the win after going 6.1 innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits. After the Bishops loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, Stansbury came on to record the final two outs.

In game two, the Pacers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and it was more than enough for Stansbury (9-5), who dominated on the mound in the complete game effort.

Abbey, Braun, Moshier, and Gordon had a hit apiece for the Bishops, while freshman hurler Brooke Davis (3-5) took the loss. Davis gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits over three complete.

Wesleyan returns to action at home this weekend when the Bishops host a USA South twinbill versus Averett University on Saturday. NCWC will then host non-conference foe Guilford College on Sunday. Game one is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Edge Field on both days.
