Bishop volleyball earns first three wins at Roanoke Tourney

Roanoke, VA - Behind the stellar play of freshman Brittany Insley (pictured), the North Carolina Wesleyan volleyball squad earned its first three victories of the 2006 season at this weekend's Roanoke College Classic.  The Bishops defeated Sweet Briar, Randolph-Macon Woman's College, and Mary Baldwin before falling to host Roanoke in the tournament's final game.  Insley tallied a team-high 46 kills in the four games.

On Friday, the Bishops rode the play of Insley to their first two wins.  Wesleyan began with a 3-0 winner over Sweet Briar by 30-15, 30-15, and 30-24 scores.  Insley recorded 11 kills and five blocks, while Caitlin George tallied 28 assists and four service aces.  Sophomore Sydney Bens added 10 kills of her own.

The Bishops then won a hard-fought 3-2 match over Randolph-Macon Woman's College by 30-26, 24-30, 30-20, 25-30, and 15-13 scores.  Insley again paced Wesleyan with 18 kills, and Bens turned in another solid game with 14 kills and 10 digs.  April Wilson and George recorded a season-high 10 blocks and 47 assists, respectively.

On Saturday, Wesleyan won its third straight with a 3-0 victory over Mary Baldwin by 30-22, 30-13, and 30-13 scores.  Insley tallied nine kills, seven blocks, and five service aces, while George recorded 21 assists and three aces.

Roanoke handed the Bishops their only loss in the tournament's final game in a 3-0 sweep.  Game scores were 30-25, 30-25, and 30-13.  Bens led NCWC with 10 kills and eight digs.

After tallying 42 total kills during the two-day tournament, Bens was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Bishops (3-6) will return home on Wednesday when they host Salem College at 7:00 p.m. in Everett Gym.
