Wesleyan volleyball falls to
Guilford College, 3-1

- The North Carolina Wesleyan
volleyball squad fell to Guilford
College by a 3-1 score on Thursday
night in Everett Gymnasium.
Game scores were 30-27, 18-30,
30-28, and 30-25. The Bishops
had no answer for Quaker outside
hitter Haley Ortmann, who tallied a
game-high 28 kills in the match.
Wesleyan is now 9-8 overall, while
Guilford ups it record to 4-10 on
the season.
The
Quakers recorded an impressive 22
kills in game one to take a 1-0
match lead. The Bishops,
however, looked dominant in game two
by turning in 14 kills against just
three errors. Their 30-18 win
knotted the match at one game
apiece.
Game three proved to be pivotal in
the outcome of the match.
Wesleyan looked to be in control and
held its biggest leads at 13-5 and
19-12. Unfortunately,
the Bishops could not finish out the
win. After battling back to
tie the game at 28-28, back-to-back
kills by Ortmann and Anna Miller
gave the Quakers the win and
momentum.
Game four then saw Guilford record
17 kills to the Bishops' 11 en route
to the 30-25 game and match victory.
In
addition to Ortmann's 28 kills,
Miller and Katie Spina added 18 and
10, respectively. Becca Jones
talled 60 assists, while Kaci
Loeffler chipped in a team-high 18
digs.
For
the Bishops, freshman Alyssa Balzano
tallied 15 kills. Sydney Bens
and Kelly George each recorded 19
digs on the night.
The Bishops
return to USA South action on
Saturday when they host a conference
Play Day. Wesleyan's first
match will be at 11:00 a.m. against
Ferrum College, followed by a
match-up with Averett University
later in the evening.
