Bishops go 3-1 at RMC Tourney;
Insley breaks kills record

- It took just 74 matches for North
Carolina Wesleyan's Brittany
Insley (pictured) to become the
Bishop volleyball program's career
leader for total kills. The junior
middle hitter from Arlington, OH did
so on Saturday in a 3-0 sweep of USA
South foe Greensboro College at the
2008 Randolph-Macon Invitational
Tournament. With 12 kills in the
match, Insley passed Laura Hilbert
(1997-00) as the all-time leader
with 1,083 in her career.
The victory over the Pride also
marked the first in head coach Robin
Pietryk's tenure and was one of
three that the Bishops picked up at
the tourney. Wesleyan also
turned in wins over Trinity and Mary
Washington before falling to the
host Yellow Jackets. NCWC is
now 6-4 overall.
On
Friday, Wesleyan opened up the
tournament with a 3-0 sweep of
Trinity College. Set scores were
25-9, 25-9, and 25-16.
Sophomore Barbara DeRatt tallied 10
assists and six kills, while Alyssa
Balzano recorded seven service aces.
Senior Sydney Bens and sophomore
Kelly George had six kills and seven
digs, respectively.
In
the nightcap, the Bishops earned a
3-1 win over Mary Washington. Set
scores were 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, and
25-20. Insley paced the
Bishops with 20 digs, 17 kills, and
three blocks. Freshman
Mackenzie Tingle turned in 34
assists, and Leslie Hassell had
three aces.
Insley made history on Saturday
morning in NCWC's sweep of the
Pride. Set scores were 25-20, 25-18,
and 25-11. Tingle dished out 24
assists in the match, while George
anchored the defensive effort with a
team-high 16 digs.
In
the finale, Wesleyan lost its only
match of the tournament in a tough
five-setter with the homestanding
Jackets. Set scores were 15-25,
25-17, 25-19, 18-25, and 15-5.
Insley had 16 kills and five blocks,
and Tingle finished with 30 assists.
Bens led the Bishop defense with 22
digs.
For
her efforts, Insley was named to the
All-Tournament team.
Wesleyan will now open up USA South
play on Tuesday night at Meredith
College. Game time is slated for
7:00 p.m. in Raleigh.
