Bishops go 3-1 at RMC Tourney; Insley breaks kills record

Ashland, NC - It took just 74 matches for North Carolina Wesleyan's  Brittany Insley (pictured) to become the Bishop volleyball program's career leader for total kills. The junior middle hitter from Arlington, OH did so on Saturday in a 3-0 sweep of USA South foe Greensboro College at the 2008 Randolph-Macon Invitational Tournament. With 12 kills in the match, Insley passed Laura Hilbert (1997-00) as the all-time leader with 1,083 in her career.

The victory over the Pride also marked the first in head coach Robin Pietryk's tenure and was one of three that the Bishops picked up at the tourney.  Wesleyan also turned in wins over Trinity and Mary Washington before falling to the host Yellow Jackets.  NCWC is now 6-4 overall.

On Friday, Wesleyan opened up the tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Trinity College. Set scores were 25-9, 25-9, and 25-16.  Sophomore Barbara DeRatt tallied 10 assists and six kills, while Alyssa Balzano recorded seven service aces.  Senior Sydney Bens and sophomore Kelly George had six kills and seven digs, respectively.

In the nightcap, the Bishops earned a 3-1 win over Mary Washington. Set scores were 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-20.  Insley paced the Bishops with 20 digs, 17 kills, and three blocks.  Freshman Mackenzie Tingle turned in 34 assists, and Leslie Hassell had three aces.

Insley made history on Saturday morning in NCWC's sweep of the Pride. Set scores were 25-20, 25-18, and 25-11. Tingle dished out 24 assists in the match, while George anchored the defensive effort with a team-high 16 digs.

In the finale, Wesleyan lost its only match of the tournament in a tough five-setter with the homestanding Jackets. Set scores were 15-25, 25-17, 25-19, 18-25, and 15-5. Insley had 16 kills and five blocks, and Tingle finished with 30 assists.  Bens led the Bishop defense with 22 digs.

For her efforts, Insley was named to the All-Tournament team.

Wesleyan will now open up USA South play on Tuesday night at Meredith College. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Raleigh.
