Wesleyan volleyball remains undefeated in league play

Staunton, VA - The Battling Bishop volleyball squad continued its early season dominance with a trio of wins over the weekend.  Wesleyan began with a 3-0 sweep of non-conference foe Guilford College on Friday. The Bishops went on to take two USA South matches from Mary Baldwin and Greensboro on Saturday.  Wesleyan has now won eight of its last nine matches to improve to 10-4 overall.  More importantly, the Bishops remain tied for first place in the league standings with a perfect 3-0 conference mark.

On Friday, the Bishops cruised to a 3-0 sweep of the Quakers. Set scores were 25-23, 25-13, and 25-19. The Bishops, who recorded a solid .290 hitting percentage in the match as a team, were led individually by junior Brittany Insley's game-high 14 kills. Mackenzie Tingled added 26 assists and Alexis Gallop 10 digs to aid in the winning effort.

On Saturday, Wesleyan downed host Mary Baldwin in a 3-0 sweep. Set scores were 25-14, 25-20, and 25-18. Insley again paced the Bishops with eight kills, while Leslie Hassell and Barbara DeRatt chipped in five apiece. Tingle had 13 assists and nine digs.

In the weekend's final match, NCWC recorded its second straight win over Greensboro by defeating the Pride by a 3-1 score (25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 25-20). Insley and Hassell turned in 16 and 11 kills, respectively.  Senior Sydney Bens anchored the defensive effort with 18 digs, and libero Kelly George added 12.  Insley and Hassell also completed double-doubles with 10 digs apiece.

Wesleyan will now host a first place showdown with Christopher Newport on Wednesday night.  The two squads are slated to play a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Everett Gymnasium.  Both are undefeated in USA South action.
