Wesleyan volleyball remains
undefeated in league play

- The Battling Bishop volleyball
squad continued its early season
dominance with a trio of wins over
the weekend. Wesleyan began
with a 3-0 sweep of non-conference
foe Guilford College on Friday. The
Bishops went on to take two USA
South matches from Mary Baldwin and
Greensboro on Saturday.
Wesleyan has now won eight of its
last nine matches to improve to 10-4
overall. More importantly, the
Bishops remain tied for first place
in the league standings with a
perfect 3-0 conference mark.
On
Friday, the Bishops cruised to a 3-0
sweep of the Quakers. Set scores
were 25-23, 25-13, and 25-19. The
Bishops, who recorded a solid .290
hitting percentage in the match as a
team, were led individually by
junior Brittany Insley's game-high
14 kills. Mackenzie Tingled added 26
assists and Alexis Gallop 10 digs to
aid in the winning effort.
On
Saturday, Wesleyan downed host Mary
Baldwin in a 3-0 sweep. Set scores
were 25-14, 25-20, and 25-18. Insley
again paced the Bishops with eight
kills, while Leslie Hassell and
Barbara DeRatt chipped in five
apiece. Tingle had 13 assists and
nine digs.
In
the weekend's final match, NCWC
recorded its second straight win
over Greensboro by defeating the
Pride by a 3-1 score (25-19, 25-15,
19-25, 25-20). Insley and Hassell
turned in 16 and 11 kills,
respectively. Senior Sydney
Bens anchored the defensive effort
with 18 digs, and libero Kelly
George added 12. Insley and
Hassell also completed
double-doubles with 10 digs apiece.
Wesleyan will now host a first place
showdown with Christopher Newport on
Wednesday night. The two
squads are slated to play a
doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
in Everett Gymnasium. Both are
undefeated in USA South action.
