NCWC volleyball wins fifth
straight, moves to 3-0 in USAC play

- The Battling Bishops hosted the
first of two USA South Play Days in Everett Gymnasium on
Saturday, making the most of their homecourt advantage with
3-0 and 3-1 victories over Mary Baldwin and Greensboro,
respectively. Senior Brittany Insley (pictured) turned in
two solid performances with a combined 30 kills and .500
hitting percentage in the two contests. Wesleyan has now won
five straight matches to improve to 7-6 on the season, but
more importantly, the Bishops have opened up league play
with a 3-0 mark.
Against Mary Baldwin, set
scores were 25-15, 25-11, and 25-15. Insley tallied ten
kills in the victory, while Leslie Hassell added nine.
Sophomore setter Mackenzie Tingle dished out 30 assists, and
junior Kelly George anchored the defensive effort with 11
digs. The Bishops turned in a .366 hitting percentage as a
team compared to the Squirrel's .046.
The Pride put up a fight in
the the day's final match, eventually falling by 25-13,
24-26, 25-23, and 25-20 scores. Insley carried the Bishops
with a season-high 20 kills against just two errors, and
Tingle added 40 assists. Insley and George each had 14 digs,
while Insley also recorded six blocks.
GC's Kacie Hyatt tallied 20
kills in the losing effort, but the Pride could not overcome
Wesleyan's blocking at the net. The Bishops turned in
15 blocks in the match (10.0 total), which proved to be the
difference.
The Bishops return to
action on Wednesday when they travel to Randolph-Macon
College. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
