Hassell leads Bishop
volleyball to 3-0 league sweep of Angels
Raleigh, NC
- Sophomore Leslie Hassell tallied
12 kills, nine digs, and two blocks on Wednesday evening to
lead her Battling Bishop volleyball squad to a dominating
3-0 USA South sweep of Meredith College in Raleigh. Set
scores were 25-11, 25-18, and 25-22. Hassell (pictured)
turned in a solid .345 hitting percentage in the match,
while as a team, Wesleyan hit .300 on the night.
With the victory, the
Bishops improved to 14-9 overall, 9-2 in conference action.
The Angels drop to 11-13 on the season, 5-7 in USA South
play.
Wesleyan came out on fire
in the opening set, tallying 13 kills against just one error
en route to a 25-11 win. The Bishops went on to record a
team-high 18 kills in the second set for a 25-18 victory and
2-0 advantage in the match.
The third set saw Meredith
race out to a 11-5 lead, but NCWC rebounded by scoring seven
out of the next eight points to tie the score at 12-12
thanks to a pair of kills by junior Barbara DeRatt. A kill
by senior Brittany Insley later tied the score again at
14-14, and it was then that freshman Shana Ayers reeled off
six straight service points for a 20-14 NCWC lead. Wesleyan
went on to complete the sweep with a 25-22 victory in the
set.
In addition to Hassell's
performance, Insley finished with a match-high 17 kills and
.500 hitting percentage. Setter Mackenzie Tingle finished
with 36 assists, while Kelly George chipped in 13 digs
defensively.
For Meredith, Morgan White
recorded 10 kills and Emily Anderson had 13 digs.
Wesleyan continues to USA
South play on Saturday at Peace College. The Bishops will
take on Shenandoah at 1:00 p.m. followed by a 3:00 p.m.
match-up with the host Pacers.
