Hassell leads Bishop volleyball to 3-0 league sweep of Angels

Raleigh, NC - Sophomore Leslie Hassell tallied 12 kills, nine digs, and two blocks on Wednesday evening to lead her Battling Bishop volleyball squad to a dominating 3-0 USA South sweep of Meredith College in Raleigh. Set scores were 25-11, 25-18, and 25-22. Hassell (pictured) turned in a solid .345 hitting percentage in the match, while as a team, Wesleyan hit .300 on the night.

With the victory, the Bishops improved to 14-9 overall, 9-2 in conference action. The Angels drop to 11-13 on the season, 5-7 in USA South play.

Wesleyan came out on fire in the opening set, tallying 13 kills against just one error en route to a 25-11 win. The Bishops went on to record a team-high 18 kills in the second set for a 25-18 victory and 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third set saw Meredith race out to a 11-5 lead, but NCWC rebounded by scoring seven out of the next eight points to tie the score at 12-12 thanks to a pair of kills by junior Barbara DeRatt. A kill by senior Brittany Insley later tied the score again at 14-14, and it was then that freshman Shana Ayers reeled off six straight service points for a 20-14 NCWC lead. Wesleyan went on to complete the sweep with a 25-22 victory in the set.

In addition to Hassell's performance, Insley finished with a match-high 17 kills and .500 hitting percentage. Setter Mackenzie Tingle finished with 36 assists, while Kelly George chipped in 13 digs defensively.

For Meredith, Morgan White recorded 10 kills and Emily Anderson had 13 digs.

Wesleyan continues to USA South play on Saturday at Peace College. The Bishops will take on Shenandoah at 1:00 p.m. followed by a 3:00 p.m. match-up with the host Pacers.
