Battling Bishop volleyball honors lone senior Brittany
Insley
Rocky
Mount, NC
- North Carolina Wesleyan's
volleyball squad honored senior Brittany Insley prior to
their regular season finale versus Averett University on
Saturday afternoon. Insley (pictured) responded
with 25 kills, 11 digs, five blocks, and two service aces
against the Cougars, but unfortunately, it was not enough as
the Bishops suffered their second 3-2 upset of the day
(17-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12). Wesleyan had previously
dropped a five-setter to Ferrum (25-15, 24-26, 21-25, 25-16,
15-5). Despite the losses, the Bishops (20-12) still secured
their second straight runner-up finish in the USA South with
a 14-4 league mark.
Prior to the day's first
match versus Ferrum, the Bishops honored 2009 Parent's Day.
Wesleyan then battled back from a 1-0 deficit to take sets
two and three for a 2-1 advantage in the match. In the
fourth set, the Panthers turned in .448 team hitting
percentage to the Bishops' .062 and proceeded to run away
with game five behind 11 kills against zero attack errors.
Insley had 21 kills for the
Bishops, while Leslie Hassell and Meredith Smith added 11
and 10 kills, respectively. Mackenzie Tingle had 49
assists, and Kelly George had 22 digs defensively.
Against Averett, the
Bishops again held a 2-1 lead in the match only to drop sets
four and five. Smith had 12 kills to go along with Insley's
25, while George had 26 digs.
As the #2 seed in next
week's USA South Conference Tournament, Wesleyan will host a
play-in game on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. between 7th-seeded
Greensboro and 10th-seeded Mary Baldwin. The Bishops will take on the winner of that match at
7:00 p.m. for a chance to advance to semifinal action next
Friday at top-seeded Christopher Newport.
