| Program Overview

North Carolina Wesleyan’s volleyball program has been
moving toward the goal of becoming conference champions since head coach
Robin Pietryk began her tenure in 2000. During that time, the Battling
Bishops have been gaining in technique, knowledge, and skill of the game.
Most recently in 2008, Wesleyan
turned in one of the best seasons in program history with a 26-8 overall
record, including a 15-3 mark in USA South play and a runner-up finish in
the league standings. The 26 victories tied the program record for
wins in a season, while the 15 league victories were a program-best!
Wesleyan has opted for an increasingly tougher
schedule each year to gain in ability. The Bishops knew this was going to be
a longer road to achieve success, but the challenge has paid off in many
ways. This competition has allowed Wesleyan to see what it takes to reach
the top of the charts, and the Bishops thrive on this competitiveness.
North Carolina Wesleyan is a NCAA Division III program
that competes in the
South Region. NCAA Division III programs are non-scholarship, therefore all
financial aid is based on need and academic excellence. Athletic
scholarships are not awarded. The program is year-round and both physically and mentally
demanding. Practices are very concentrated and intense, and the coaching
staff expects players to give 100% every time they take the court.
Coach Pietryk and her staff also expect players to be
self-motivated. Wesleyan is looking for student-athletes who understand the
importance of classroom development as well as volleyball development.
Bishop players traditionally hold the highest grade point average in
athletics, and they pride themselves on this noteworthy accomplishment.
Finally, Bishop players are good people who are
constantly on display and involved in community activities. Championships
are won with quality individuals who act in a first-class manner, and the
Wesleyan volleyball program is built around this concept. |
