women fall at Mary Baldwin in hoops action, 66-62
Staunton, VA
- For the second straight day, the
North Carolina Wesleyan women's basketball team saw a
12-point first half lead evaporate as the Bishops suffered a
heartbreaking 66-62 conference loss on the road at Mary
Baldwin (5-7,
2-4).
The Bishops, who have now dropped two straight league games
by a total of seven points, are now 4-6 on the season, 1-3
in USA South action.
In the first half, Wesleyan
raced out to a 17-5 lead in the first eight minutes of play.
The Squirrels, however, put together a 14-2 run over the
next seven minutes to knot the game at 19-19. MBC
would take a 28-26 lead in the break.
The second half saw Mary
Baldwin net the first seven points of the period, but this
time is was the Bishops who countered with a 15-2 run of
their own to go up 41-35 with 11:53 remaining.
The final ten minutes
featured five lead changes.
Wesleyan held its final advantage at 62-61 with 59 ticks
left on the clock. Unfortunately for the Bishops, the
Squirrels scored the game's final five points for the 66-62
final.
MBC's Jessica Carter led
all scorers with 27 points, while Christie Hamilton and Kara
Hawkins each recorded double-doubles.
For the Bishops, senior
Cheyenne Hall turned in a solid performance with 20 points
and 10 rebounds. Essence Chambers and Desiree' Driver
chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Wesleyan returns home to
Everett Gymnasium on Tuesday night when the Bishops host
Christopher Newport University at 5:30 p.m.
