nets 30, Bishops cruise to 18-point win over MBC

- Junior Essence Chambers netted a
season-high 30 points on Saturday afternoon, leading her
North Carolina Wesleyan women's basketball squad to a 75-57
win over Mary Baldwin College in Everett Gymnasium. Chambers
(pictured) knocked down a key three pointer as time expired
in the first half to give the Bishops a 13-point lead at the
break, and she went on to score 17 more points in the second
period to secure the victory. The win snaps Wesleyan's
six-game losing streak and gives the Bishops a 5-10 overall
record, including a 2-7 mark in USA South action.
Mary Baldwin (7-9, 4-6)
jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the first five minutes of
play. Wesleyan fought back to tie the game at 13-13
thanks to eight points in a two-minute span by sophomore
Courtney Brown. Brown's second three-pointer of the
game actually gave the Bishops their first lead at 16-13
with 9:47 remaining. They would not trail again.
Wesleyan began to pull away
and held its biggest lead of the period on Chambers'
three-pointer at the buzzer. The 36-23 advantage at
the half was extended to as much as 20 at one point in the
final period. The Squirrels never got any closer than
nine.
As a team, the Bishops shot
57 percent in the second half. Chambers' 30 led all
scorers, while Nicole Williams chipped in 15 points and five
assists. Freshman Desiree' Driver and Gretchen Tobias
each pulled down eight rebounds.
For MBC, Jessica Carter
finished with 13 points and five assists. Kara Hawkins added
double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
Wesleyan continues its
current homestand on Sunday when Ferrum College visits
Everett Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
