Christopher Newport women role past Wesleyan, 81-55

Newport News, VA - In Tuesday night women’s basketball action, the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan fell on the road to USA South foe Christopher Newport by an 81-55 score.  The Captains jumped out to a 20-10 lead behind the solid play of Colandra Rollins and led 40-26 at the break before cruising to the victory. Wesleyan falls to 7-13 overall and 4-10 in the USA South. CNU improves to 16-4 on the year and 11-2 in conference play.

Rollins needed just six points to eclipse the 1,000 point mark for her career, and she did so with 13:47 left in the first half.  Rollins finished with 22 points and 11 boards to lead all players.

CNU shot 27-of-55 (49%) from the floor for the game, 6-of-14 (43%) from long range, and 21-of-28 (75%) from the charity stripe. Chelsie Schweers added 18 points and seven rebounds, while Jessica Moore contributed 13 points and nine rebounds. Kelly White had 10 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks.

For the game, the Bishops finished 18-of-61 (30%) from the field, 4-of-15 (27%) from behind the arc and 15-of-24 (63%) from the free throw line. Essence Chambers led Wesleyan with 16 points and five assists. Nicole Williams finished with 11 points.

The Bishops return to action on Saturday when Greensboro College visits Everett Gymnasium.  Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m., and Wesleyan players will be honoring the USA South’s “Think Pink” initiative and Parent’s Day.
