Greensboro women come from behind to down NCWC,
72-65
Rocky
Mount, NC - In Saturday afternoon USA South
women's basketball action, first-place Greensboro
College got a scare from a determined North Carolina
Wesleyan squad, overcoming an early 13-point deficit
to down the Battling Bishops by a 72-65 score in
Everett Gymnasium. Much of the Bishops' impressive
play came from freshman T'Keya Holloway (pictured),
who turned in her first career double-double with 14
points and 13 rebounds. With the loss, the Bishops
drop to 4-9 overall, 2-4 in league action. The Pride
improve to 13-1 on the season and remain undefeated
in conference play at 7-0.
Wesleyan opened up a quick 10-2
lead behind the play of Holloway and sophomore
Desiree' Driver, who combined for eight points
during the run. The two also helped out at the
defensive end, where the Bishops forced Greensboro
into three quick turnovers and a 0-for-12 start from
the floor.
A three-point play by senior
Essence Chambers gave the Bishops their biggest lead
of the half at 29-16 with just over two minutes left
in the period. The Pride, however, closed out the
period with a 10-2 run of their own to cut
Wesleyan's lead to 31-26 at the break.
The second half saw Wesleyan lead
by as many as nine at 42-33 with 15:44
remaining. Five minutes later, NCWC held a 47-42
advantage only to see the Pride knock down four
consecutive free throws pull within one at the 10:40
mark. Greensboro proceeded to take its first lead of
the game just 17 seconds later on a steal and lay-up
by Nikki Wilborn. The Pride would not trail again
as the Bishops got no closer than four points at
64-60 the rest of the way.
With no significant difference
between shooting percentages, rebounding, or
turnovers, the difference in the game came at the
charity stripe where Greensboro cashed in 27 times
to the Bishops' 18.
GC's Dionne Eccles led all
scorers with 20 points, 11 of which came at the free
throw line. Duncan finished with 15 points and seven
boards.
For Wesleyan, Essence Chambers
turned in team-high 16 points to go along with
Holloway's 14, while Gretchen Tobias and Meredith
Mills chipped eight points apiece.
Wesleyan returns to action at
home on Tuesday when Methodist University visits
Rocky Mount. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in
Everett Gymnasium. Live audio and in-game statistics
