Bishops earn two league wins in women's soccer action

Rocky Mount, NC - Junior Rachel Rosenbarker (pictured) tallied her first game-winning goal of the season of Sunday, helping her North Carolina Wesleyan women's soccer team earn a 3-0 win over USA South foe Shenandoah at Scalf Field.  The Bishops, who got hat tricks from Reva McCloud and Meredith Hester in a 7-2 victory over Mary Baldwin on Saturday, are now 4-7-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in conference play.  Wesleyan has now won three out of its last four contests.

After the Hornets and Bishops fought to a scoreless tie at the break, Rosenbarker booted home a Mayra Gomez corner kick in the 58th minute to give NCWC a 1-0 lead.  Gomez added to that lead just 3:15 later when her 20-yard shot from the left side found the back of the net.

Wesleyan got another insurance goal at the 87:00 mark on a Meredith Hester goal.  Sophomore Aubrey Bonorden was credited with the assist after blasting a shot off the crossbar that created a rebound shot for Hester.

The Bishops out-shot Shenandoah 30-6 on the day.

In Saturday's action, NCWC took an early 3-0 lead in the first 22 minutes of play. Hester scored the game's first goal on a Rosenbarker assist, while McCloud netted goals two and three on Gomez and Hester passes, respectively.

Mary Baldwin, however, made it a game with two goals by Marguerite Cook.  The first came off a defender deflection, and the second came on a 30-yard shot past Bishop keeper Sarah Hess.   Wesleyan took the 3-2 lead into intermission.

It was all NCWC in the second half as the Bishops managed three goals in a 57-second span near the beginning of the period.  Rosenbarker scored the first, followed by two Hester goals to complete her hat trick.  McCloud notched her third goal of the game at the 77:01 mark for the 7-2 final.

NCWC out-shot MBC 27-7 on the day.

In the two matches, Hess and Bryanne Godfrey split the wins and shutouts in goal as each recorded two saves.

Wesleyan continues USA South action on Wednesday when the Bishops host Methodist University.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
