Methodist
women shutout Wesleyan in league
play, 3-0

- The Monarchs of Methodist
University scored the game's
first goal just before the break
and went on to tally two scores
in the second half en route to a
3-0 shutout of North Carolina
Wesleyan in Wednesday's soccer
action at Scalf Field. The
win gives Methodist an 11-2-0
mark overall and keeps the
Monarchs atop the USA South
standings at 6-0-0. With
the loss, the Battling Bishops
drop to 4-8-0 on the season with
a 3-3-0 conference record.
MU's
Christina Layson netted the
game's first goal and eventual
game-winner in the 42nd minute,
unassisted. Layson juked
her Bishop defender to get off a
shot that found the back of the
net.
Prior to the
goal, Bishop goalie Sarah Hess
had made eight saves in the
period to keep the two squads
knotted at 0-0.
Methodist
managed two quick goals in the
final period. Whitney
Roberson booted home the first
on a Chrystal Bradley assist,
while Bradley added the game's
final goal on a penalty kick.
Both goals came in the first
seven minutes of the second
half.
Hess suffered
the loss but made 14 saves on 28
Monarch shots. MU keepers
Emily Stratton and Kasey Nichols
combined for the shutout as each
made two saves on four shots.
Wesleyan will
now enjoy a 10-day break before
returning to action next
Saturday, October 20th at Ferrum
College. Game time is
slated for 2:00 p.m.
