Methodist women earn 5-1 league soccer victory over NCWC

Fayettville, NC - Behind two goals and an assist by forward Whitney Roberson, the Monarch women's soccer team of Methodist University earned a 5-1 USA South victory over North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday in Fayetteville.  Roberson netted the game's first and third goals, while assisting on the eventual gamewinner for Methodist (10-5, 6-0 USAC).  With the loss, the Battling Bishops drop to 4-8-1 on the season, 2-3-1 in conference play.

The Monarchs raced out to a 3-0 lead with goals in the 18th, 21st, and 36th minutes.  Erica Nath netted the game's second goal and eventual gamewinner off a Monarch corner kick at the 20:25 mark.

Wesleyan's lone score also came off a successful corner as junior Aubrey Bonorden booted home her fourth goal of the season from 20 yards out.  NCWC trailed 3-1 at the break.

In the second half, the Monarchs upped their lead to 4-1 less than two minutes in on an unassisted score by Michelle Anderson.  MU went on to add an insurance goal by Danielle Minichello with 21:47 remaining for the 5-1 final.

Methodist out-shot Wesleyan 24-9 in the match. NCWC keepers Bryanne Godfrey and Sarah Hess recorded seven saves apiece, while MU keeper Kasey Nichols had four stops on the day.

The Bishops return to action next Saturday at home versus Ferrum College. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Scalf Field. Wesleyan will be recognizing both Senior Day and Parent's Day.
