Methodist women earn 5-1
league soccer victory over NCWC
Fayettville, NC -
Behind two goals and an assist by forward Whitney Roberson,
the Monarch women's soccer team of Methodist University
earned a 5-1 USA South victory over North Carolina Wesleyan
on Sunday in Fayetteville. Roberson netted the game's
first and third goals, while assisting on the eventual
gamewinner for Methodist (10-5, 6-0 USAC). With the
loss, the Battling Bishops drop to 4-8-1 on the season,
2-3-1 in conference play.
The Monarchs raced out to a
3-0 lead with goals in the 18th, 21st, and 36th minutes.
Erica Nath netted the game's second goal and eventual
gamewinner off a Monarch corner kick at the 20:25 mark.
Wesleyan's lone score also
came off a successful corner as junior Aubrey Bonorden
booted home her fourth goal of the season from 20 yards out.
NCWC trailed 3-1 at the break.
In the second half, the
Monarchs upped their lead to 4-1 less than two minutes in on
an unassisted score by Michelle Anderson. MU went on
to add an insurance goal by Danielle Minichello with 21:47
remaining for the 5-1 final.
Methodist out-shot Wesleyan
24-9 in the match. NCWC keepers Bryanne Godfrey and Sarah
Hess recorded seven saves apiece, while MU keeper Kasey
Nichols had four stops on the day.
The
Bishops return to action next Saturday at home versus Ferrum
College. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
Wesleyan will be recognizing both Senior Day and Parent's
Day.
