Bishop women celebrate Senior Day with 2-1 win over Ferrum

Rocky Mount, NC - The women's soccer team of North Carolina Wesleyan celebrated its 2008 Senior Day in style on Saturday, picking up a thrilling 2-1 win over Ferrum College at Scalf Field. Fittingly, it was senior captain Tori Tenner who headed home the gamewinner with just 33 seconds remaining to break a 1-1 tie and effectively end a game that seemed destined for overtime. Prior to the match, head coach Beverly Biancur and her squad honored their eight seniors: Bryanne Godfrey, Reva McCloud, Mikey Case, Alex Fountaine, Rachel Hernandez, Lauren Stearns, Megan Kintner, and Tenner (all pictured).

Wesleyan (5-8-1, 3-3-1 USAC) managed a 1-0 lead at intermission thanks to a goal by Carolina Mussi in the 37th minute. McCloud was credited with her 12th assist of the season after feeding a perfect pass through the middle to a cutting Mussi, who beat Panther keeper Katie Hodkinson with a low shot to her left.

Ferrum (5-10-1, 2-5-0 USAC) tied the game at the 76:33 mark with a score by Kelsey Walters. Jessica Lively picked up the assist as Walters shot the ball to right of Godfrey.

The match looked to be headed for overtime with less than a minute remaining, but a key foul called on the Panthers just outside the box set up an Aubrey Bonorden free kick. The sophomore delivered a beautiful ball into the box, setting the stage for Tenner's heroics.

Wesleyan out-shot Ferrum 14-13 in the match. Godfrey made five saves en route to the win, while Hodkinson finished with six stops in the losing effort.

The Bishops continue USA South play on Wednesday when Christopher Newport visits Scalf Field. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
