CNU earns 2-0 win over
Wesleyan in women's soccer action
Rocky
Mount, NC -
Christopher Newport University scored two first half goals
on Wednesday afternoon at Scalf Field, and it was all the
Captains would need to remain perfect in USA South play as
they captured a 2-0 win over the homestanding Bishops of
North Carolina Wesleyan. With the win, CNU improves to
11-6-1 on the season, 8-0 in league play. Despite turning in
a solid performance, the Bishops fall to 5-9-1 overall,
3-4-1 in conference action.
The Bishops played a
stellar defensive game, but they were unable to overcome
scores by Katie Jaywork and Jenn Campbell in the 30th and
33rd minutes. The Captains went on to out-shoot Wesleyan
24-7 on the day.
Wesleyan narrowly missed
taking a 1-0 lead when senior Rachel Hernandez rifled a
15-yard shot just over the post at the 27:56 mark. The scare
seemed to awaken the Captains, who proceeded to tally their
two goals over the next five minutes.
NCWC keepers Bryanne
Godfrey and Sarah Hess split time in goal and combined for
nine saves. CNU goalies Dineen Sampson and Erin Wojtkun also
split time between the pipes, combining for three saves.
The
Bishops will wrap up their 2008 regular season slate on
Saturday when Averett University visits Scalf Field. Game
time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
