Bishop women down Averett 5-0 in regular season finale

Rocky Mount, NC - On "Think Pink" day at Scalf Field, the women's soccer team of North Carolina Wesleyan picked up an impressive 5-0 shutout of Averett University in the regular season finale for both squads. Senior Reva McCloud (pictured) scored the eventual gamewinner in the 20th minute and went on to dish out two more assists in the final home game of her career. The Bishops (6-9-1) will enter next week's USA South Conference Tournament as the #6 seed with a 4-4-1 league mark.

Also playing the final home game of her career, senior Tori Tenner assisted on McCloud's goal at the 19:14 mark.  McCloud returned the favor less than four minutes later when the duo connected once again for the game's second score.  Junior Meredith Hester closed out the first half with a goal on an assist by Tija Riley for a 3-0 Bishop lead at intermission.

In the second half, McCloud notched another assist on a goal by freshman Carolina Mussi at the 53:02 mark.  Wesleyan's bench then erupted 20 minutes later when sophomore Lauren Young scored her first career goal on a breakaway.  Freshman Courtney Jamieson was awarded an assist on the play.

Senior Bryanne Godfrey played 65 minutes in goal and made two saves, while teammate Sarah Hess completed the shutout by recording one save.  AU keeper Samantha Lupo notched seven saves in the losing effort.

Wesleyan out-shot Averett 15-7 on the day and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The 6th-seeded Bishops will travel to 3rd-seeded Methodist University for the opening round of the USAC Tourney on Tuesday. Game time is slated for 11:30 a.m. in Fayetteville.
