NCWC women's soccer ends
season with 4-0 loss to Monarchs
Fayetteville, NC -
The North Carolina Wesleyan women's soccer team saw its 2008
season come to an end on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-0 loss
to Methodist University in the first round of the USA South
Conference Tournament. The Bishops forced a 0-0 tie at the
half, but the Monarchs scored four unanswered goals in the
final period to advance. Wesleyan finishes the season at
6-10-1 overall, while the game marked the end of the careers
of seniors Bryanne Godfrey, Reva McCloud, Mikey Case, Alex
Fountaine, Rachel Hernandez, Lauren Stearns, Tori Tenner,
and Megan Kintner.
Godfrey made six saves on
seven MU shots in the first half to secure a 0-0 tie at the
break. Unfortunately, the Monarchs' Allyson Feller netted
the eventual gamewinner in the 51st minute, while Marissa
Kuzbyt (73:54), Jillian Reed (77:59/PK), and Whitney
Roberson (81:34) followed suit with scores of their own for
the 4-0 final.
Methodist out-shot Wesleyan
16-4 on the day and held a 17-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Godfrey finished with seven saves, while teammate Sarah Hess
had two over the final 40 minutes of play. MU keepers Kasey
Nichols and Sara Altman combined for the shutout, tallying
three stops in the contest.
With the win, the Monarchs
advance to Friday's semifinal action at Christopher Newport
University. NCWC and head coach Beverly Biancur will now
turn their sites to replacing the eight seniors that have
meant so much to the Battling Bishop program over the past
four years.
