Wesleyan
women drop OT heartbreaker to
open season
Rocky
Mount, NC -
The Bishop women's soccer team
of North Carolina Wesleyan
opened its 2008 season at home
on Tuesday afternoon at Scalf
Field. Facing off against
Division II rival St. Andrews
Presbyterian in extreme heat,
the two squads fought to a 0-0
tie in regulation before the
Knights handed the Bishops a
heartbreaking 1-0 loss behind a Jodi
Frazier Golden Goal in the 99th
minute. SAPC evens its record at
1-1 on the season, while NCWC
will take an 0-1 mark into this
weekend's Esprit Division III
Invitational.
Both teams
squandered scoring chances in
the opening period. Bishop
junior Meredith Hester narrowly
missed two scores. Her first
shot of the game hit the
crossbar, while the second was
deflected by SAPC goalie
Garrison Burton and booted off
the line by a Knight defender.
The Knights'
offense was equal to the task as
NCWC senior keeper Bryanne
Godfrey recorded nine saves on
the day. Unfortunately,
Frazier's chip shot beat her
high for the game-winner.
St. Andrews
out-shot Wesleyan 19-12 in the
contest with Burton making five
saves.
Wesleyan
returns to action on Friday and
Saturday at the Esprit Division
III Invitational Tournament
hosted by Meredith College.
The Bishops will take on
Marymount on Friday at 4:00
p.m., followed by a match-up
with Bridgewater College on
Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
