McCloud leads Bishops to first win at Esprit DIII Tourney

Raleigh, NC - Senior Reva McCloud notched her first goal and assist of the season this weekend, leading her Bishop women's soccer team to a 1-1 mark at the Esprit Division III Tournament hosted by Meredith College.  McCloud (pictured) scored the gamewinner on Friday as Wesleyan picked up its first win of 2008 with a 1-0 shutout of Marymount.  She went on to tally an assist on the Bishops' second goal against Bridgewater on Saturday, a game that eventually ended in a 3-2 double-overtime loss.  For their efforts, McCloud and senior goalie Bryanne Godfrey were each named to the All-Tournament team. Wesleyan is now 1-2 to start the season.

On Friday, neither defense would bend as Godfrey and Marymount keeper Candace Dangora each recorded seven saves on the day. The Saints out-shot the Bishops 11-10 in the match.

McCloud, however, converted a breakaway in the 50th minute that saw the senior boot home the game's only goal with her left foot, unassisted.  It was all the Bishops would need as Godfrey turned in her first shutout of the season.

On Saturday, Bridgewater took the initial lead with a goal by Caroline Bundrick in the 39th minute.  Junior Aubrey Bonorden, however, tied the game early in the second half with a perfectly executed corner. With just over 25 minutes remaining, junior Meredith Hester got in on the action when she notched her first goal of the season on an assist from McCloud.  The score gave NCWC a 2-1 lead.

Unfortunately, the Eagles managed to tie the score with a goal by Ashley Andes at the 69:28 mark.  Andes went on to score the Golden Goal just second into the second overtime, sending Wesleyan to its second overtime defeat in its first three games.

Bridgewater out-shot NCWC 22-9 on the day, but Godfrey turned in 10 saves to keep the Bishops in the match. Keepers Brooke Barham and Carrie Hensley combined to tally six saves for the Eagles.

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday when the Bishops travel to Limestone College.  Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
