Wesleyan women fall to Meredith in USA South opener, 4-3
Raleigh,
NC -
The women's soccer team of North Carolina Wesleyan nearly
overcame a 3-1 halftime deficit on Wednesday afternoon at
Meredith College, but the Bishops fell just short in a 4-3
loss to the Angels in the USA South Conference opener for
both squads. Senior Rachel Hernandez (pictured) scored
Wesleyan's lone first half goal, while Meredith Hester and
Reva McCloud each notched scores in the second half. The
Bishops are now 2-4 overall, 0-1 in league play. Three of
the Wesleyan's four losses have been by a single goal.
Meredith (6-2, 1-0 USAC) opened up a 2-0 advantage with
goals by Maggie Hart and Alex Calvert in the 9th and 12th
minutes, respectively. Hernandez, however, cut the lead in
half when she took advantage of an Angel defensive miscue at
the 24:27 mark. The goal was her second of the season.
Hart
later notched her second goal of the period to give the
Angels a 3-1 lead at intermission.
Hester
opened the scoring for the Bishops in the second half with a
goal from Carolina Mussi in the 60th minute to bring NCWC to
within one at 3-2. Unfortunately, Calvert once again
made it a two-goal game with a score in the 74th minute from
Anna Buryk.
McCloud closed out the scoring with 30 seconds remaining,
unassisted, for the 4-3 final in favor MC.
Meredith out-shot Wesleyan 20-10 in the match. NCWC keeper
Bryanne Godfrey took the loss after allowing four goals and
making eight saves. Sarah Chadwick gave up three goals and
notched three saves en route to the win.
Wesleyan continues USA South play on Saturday when the
Bishops head to Greensboro College. Game time is slated for
2:00 p.m.
