Bishop women
drop pair of USA South matches over weekend
Rocky
Mount, NC
- The women’s soccer team of North Carolina Wesleyan
dropped a pair of USA South Conference matches at
home over the weekend, falling to Greensboro College
by a 3-0 score on Saturday before dropping a
hard-fought 1-0 contest to Methodist University on
Sunday. The two losses leave the Battling Bishops
with a 3-8 overall record and 1-3 mark in league
play.
On Sunday versus
Methodist, the Monarchs got all the offense they
would need when senior Whitney Roberson booted home
the game’s only score at the 6:14 mark. After a
scrum in the box that both teams struggled to
control, Roberson was in the right place at the
right time to shoot the ball to the left of diving
NCWC keeper Tiina Rastiola.
Methodist had
several scoring opportunities thwarted by Rastiola
over the course of the contest as the freshman
goalie made a career-high eight saves on the day.
The Monarchs also had one shot hit off the post in
the second half.
Despite getting
out-shot 17-5 in the contest, Rastiola’s play kept
Wesleyan in the game, and the Bishops narrowly
missed tying the game late in the second half when
senior Meredith Hester’s second shot of the match
was rejected by MU keeper Kasey Nichols. The
Monarchs (8-5-1, 4-1-1 USAC) went on to secure the
1-0 victory and shutout.
On Saturday versus
Greensboro, all three of the Pride’s goals were
scored in the first half. Tessa Hall got Greensboro
on the board at the 8:14 mark on an assist by Mary
Reinhardt. Melissa Torzewski made it 2-0 in the 29th
minute, and Meredith Kelly rounded out the scoring
with a goal from Torzewski just six minutes later.
GC (6-4-1, 4-0-1
USAC) out-shot NCWC 17-7 on the day and held a 5-1
advantage in corners. A trio of Bishop goalies
combined for six saves on the day, led by Rastiola’s
four stops. Pride keeper Katie Allegro earned the
shutout for the visitors.
Wesleyan takes a
break from conference play on Thursday when the
Bishops travel to Washington & Lee. Game time is
slated for 4:00 p.m. in Lexington, VA.
