Bishop women drop regular season finale to Captains, 5-1

Rocky Mount, NC -  In Friday afternoon women's soccer action, the Captains of Christopher Newport University forged a 4-0 halftime lead and went on to secure a 5-1 victory over homestanding North Carolina Wesleyan in the regular season finale for both teams. Junior Lauren Young tallied the Bishops' lone goal in the 48th minute on an assist from Meredith Hester, but it was too little too late as NCWC dropped to 5-12-1 on the season entering next week's USA South Conference Tournament.

The Captains (9-7-3, 7-0-2 USAC) got goals from five different players, beginning with Megan Conheeney's score at the 14:50 mark (from Kendall Dishaw).  CNU's Sam Ciaravino netted what proved to be the eventual gamewinner a little over four minutes later (from Tiffany Van Decker), while Katie Jaywork made it 3-0 in the 34th minute when she headed home a cross from Lauren Fleming.  Ciaravino later found a breaking Elise Haug for the 4-0 halftime score.

NCWC got on the board early in the second half when Young took a cross from Meredith Hester, beat her defender, and laced a 15-yard shot past CNU keeper Meghan Gumbs.  The Captains, however, would not allow another shot from that point on, and Brittany Rubin's blast with 31 seconds remaining provided the 5-1 final.

CNU out-shot the Bishops 17-3 on the day with NCWC keepers Tiina Rastiola and Sarah Hess combining for six saves. The Captains also held a 7-3 advantage in corners.

Wesleyan will now await seeding for next week's USA South Conference Tournament. The Bishops will play on Tuesday, November 3rd at an opponent to be determined.
